Despite its reputation today as one of Nike’s most iconic silhouettes, the sneaker was slated to be discontinued just two years after its original release. Three local Baltimore retailers—dubbed "The Three Amigos”—were credited with reviving the model’s popularity with an initiative called "Color of the Month Club”, a series of custom colorways of the Air Force 1 sold and promoted organically at three local storefronts. The initiative was a massive success across the east coast and reignited the iconic design's popularity for decades to come.
