A starting point for me when developing a new collection is to think of locations and settings I can see certain silhouettes living in. As we began ideating for Summer 2022, a place that I kept coming back to mentally was the Goldstein Residence in Beverly Hills. An architectural marvel, this house helped shaped the way I view our collection.

The house was built between 1961-1963 by John Lautner, who trained as an apprentice under Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin and oversaw some of Wright’s most iconic residences. The design of the house is meant to emulate the scenery around it, as it’s built into the sandstone ledge of a cliff. The architecture was conceived from the inside out, using operable design elements for complete openings to the sky, as well as frameless glass fixtures for an expansive view where you can see everything from downtown to the Pacific Ocean.

The current owner, James F. Goldstein, bought the residence in 1972 in a state of disrepair. He tracked down John Lautner to help him renovate and perfect it. They worked together from 1972, until Lautner’s passing in 1994. Lautner not only designed the house, but also the interiors, windows, lighting, rugs, and furniture. Today the house has a rooftop tennis court, a skyspace art installation by James Turrell, a personal night club, a koi pond and waterfall, and so many other elements that don’t seem real.

It’s served as the backdrop to countless movies, shows, commercials, fashion campaigns, and more. The first time I remember seeing it was in the Big Lebowski.
