NY to the World - Steve Buscemi
Steve Buscemi - a New York legend and auteur. Born in Brooklyn, Buscemi has become one of the most lauded character actors in history.
Before starting his career, he worked as a volunteer fireman with Manhattan Engine Company #55 in the early 1980’s. This experience remained a part of him, and the day after 9/11 he went back to his firehouse to volunteer at Ground Zero.
He made his acting debut in 1985, doing some indie films and television spots like Miami Vice. In 1989 he starred in Martin Scorsese’s segment of New York Stories, leading him to being recognized by several iconic filmmakers. In 1990 he began his longtime relationship with the Coen Brothers when he starred in Millers Crossing. This would be the first of six Coen Bros. movies he’d star in, making him the directing duo’s most casted actor. In 1992 he gained wider attention for his portrayal of Mr. Pink in Reservoir Dogs.
In his prime, Buscemi was known as one of the most prolific working actors. Between 1989 and 2009, he would star in an average of four movies every year. Success would follow this work ethic, and from 1992 to 1998 he had one of the most iconic strings of acclaimed movies in history, including - Pulp Fiction, Fargo, Con Air, The Big Lebowski, Armageddon, and more.
In addition to his acting work, he has also been praised as a director for both film and television. During his stint on The Sopranos, he received an Emmy nomination for his acting, while also directing several episodes including the very famous “Pine Barrens”.
In 2010 he began starring as the lead role of Nucky Thompson in the Scorsese-executive produced series Boardwalk Empire, which would win him a Golden Globe for Best Actor.
